In the Persian Bazaar: The Roar of Empire
Episode One: The Dread of the West Wind (Zephyrus)
1. The Beginning of the End
The Persian bazaar lay bathed in golden sunlight, as it always had.
Danesh the bookseller brushed dust from his ancient volumes, while beside him Inaz scattered the scent of saffron into the air. The clamor of trade, the cries of camels, the low chanting of beggars—together they formed a perfect harmony, a paradise that felt eternal.
That peace was torn apart by a single shout.
“Open the way! Clear the path!”
A horse burst through the main gate of the market at full gallop. Its rider wore the armor of the western garrison, yet his helmet was dented, his cloak soaked in blood and mud.
“An emergency! I must see Caliph Reza at once! The Macedonian army has crossed the Hellespont!”
At those words, the ticking of the market clock rang in Danesh’s ears like a countdown to death.
2. Cyrus’s Instinct
At the market entrance, Cyrus was finishing preparations for departure when he fixed his gaze on the messenger.
Beside him, the scout Shahin muttered in a low voice.
“Captain… that horse isn’t running like it fled a skirmish. That’s the stride of a beast driven by pure terror.”
Cyrus tossed the fine silk he was holding onto the camel’s back.
“Business is over, Shahin. Go to Danesh. Buy every ‘Map of the West’ and every book on geopolitics he has. Tell him money is no object.”
“Captain, are you serious? This could be nothing more than a border clash.”
“No. The wind is different.”
Cyrus stared toward the unseen western sky beyond the desert.
“What I saw in that messenger’s eyes wasn’t human… it was the storm itself. We crossed the desert to make money. From now on, we cross it to survive.”
3. The Princess’s Premonition
On the palace terrace, Princess Nilfar sat as her maid, Inji, combed her hair.
She had noticed it—the noise rising from the bazaar was sharper than usual, a discordant sound.
“Inji… listen. The birds are all flying south at once.”
“Your Highness, it must simply be the change of seasons,” Inji replied brightly, though her hands trembled.
Heavy armor clinked as the guard Hossein approached. He knelt and bowed deeply, his expression grimmer than ever before.
“Princess Nilfar… an order has come from the King. From today, nighttime movement in the bazaar is forbidden, and palace security is doubled. The western conqueror has bared his fangs at the throat of our empire.”
Nilfar clenched the water-lily pendant at her chest.
“Hossein… this means war, doesn’t it?”
“We will prevail. This Persian soil will not be defiled by foreign boots.”
His vow was strong, yet Nilfar saw the truth—the hilt of his crescent blade was white in his grip.
4. Shadows Stir
Beneath the bazaar, in the tent of the fortune-teller Jare, the snake charmer Shahab lurked like a shadow.
“Old Jare… what do you see in your crystal?”
Jare stared into it with clouded eyes and slowly shook her head.
“Fire… a golden-maned lion’s flame that devours all. Shahab, your flute cannot calm that blaze.”
Shahab grinned and drew the dagger he had hidden.
“If music won’t stop it, then I’ll cut its throat myself. I like these dark alleys of the bazaar. Anyone who brings war here will die slowly—by a snake’s poison.”
5. The Night of Resolve
That night, no one in the market slept.
Kabir and his beggars sat upon the stone pavement they had polished with their own hands, staring toward the western sky.
Inaz packed every spice from his shop and hid them away in the underground storerooms.
And Cyrus stood before his men, speaking quietly—yet with fire.
“Listen well. From now on, we load weapons instead of cargo. We’re merchants, and no one beats us at weighing profit and loss. Anyone willing to sell their own life—and this market’s pride—at a bargain price doesn’t belong here!”
At the market gate, the west wind blew cold.
It was the overture to the collapse of an empire that had flourished for centuries.
