Cast:
* Shota – Devoted dad, always trying his best. Favorite Ghibli film: Porco Rosso.
* Ria – Overenthusiastic mom, slightly clumsy. Favorite: Kiki’s Delivery Service.
* Evelyn – The practical daughter and the calmest of the trio. Loves Spirited Away.
Chapter 1: Enter the Ghibli Kingdom
“Ghibli Museum dayyyyy!” Evelyn had been shouting with joy since 6:30 AM.
Ria was already dressed with a giant red bow in her hair. “Kiki style, baby!”
Shota looked concerned. “Are we... allowed to cosplay in there?”
“It’s inspired fashion, not cosplay,” Ria said with a wink.
“You look like you're delivering potions.”
They rode the train to Mitaka and hopped on the Ghibli-doodled bus. At 10:00 AM, they stood before the giant robot from Laputa.
“Wow… he’s massive,” Evelyn whispered.
“Take a picture! I’m gonna pose in tune with him,” Ria said, dramatically holding out her arms.
“What does ‘in tune’ even mean?” Shota asked.
“Emotional resonance! Become one with the robot!”
Evelyn muttered, “Today’s gonna be long…”
Chapter 2: The Curse of the Selfie
Outside the museum (where photos are allowed), Ria was on fire.
“Okay, Shota, pretend the soot sprites just jumped out at you!”
“Why do I have to be the scared one?”
“It’s for the composition!”
Evelyn sighed, “Mom, your camera’s upside down.”
“Huh?”
Click.
Ria had just captured a blurry close-up of her thumb, heroically blocking half the screen.
“Nooooo! My masterpiece!!”
“I feel like that thumb has more presence than Totoro,” Evelyn said.
“Delete! DELETE!”
“You’ve created art, Mom. Avant-garde art.”
Chapter 3: Tears in the Theater
Inside the small cinema “Saturn Theater,” they watched a 10-minute short titled Looking for a Home.
Five minutes in—
Ria was sobbing.
“They were just—looking—for a little home… and the bug… it tried so hard…”
“Mom,” whispered Evelyn, “you’re audibly crying.”
“But it's so sweeeeet…”
“Okay but stop narrating your feelings.”
Chapter 4: The Tragedy of the Missed Totoro
“Let’s grab souvenirs and head out,” said Shota, already eyeing the gift shop.
Suddenly, Ria shouted:
“WAIT. We didn’t see the Totoro room!”
“We totally did,” said Evelyn. “You hugged the big plush and made pig noises.”
“That was the children’s Catbus! I need the adult Totoro zone!”
“There is… no adult Totoro zone,” Shota said.
Ria didn’t listen. She spun around—and sprinted the wrong way, back into the museum.
“Mom, no! That’s the exit!” Evelyn shouted.
Security gently intercepted her.
“Sorry, ma’am. No re-entry through this door.”
Ria looked like she might cry again. “I… I just wanted… to resonate with Totoro…”
Chapter 5: The Shop Strikes Back
Back in the gift shop, Evelyn picked out a No-Face coin purse.
Shota grabbed a Porco Rosso mug and declared, “This is peak masculinity.”
Ria was hugging a giant Totoro plush nearly the size of Evelyn.
“Ria. No.”
“But he whispered, ‘Take me with you’…”
“That’s not whispering. That’s marketing.”
Chapter 6: Recovery at Inokashira Park
They took their lunch break on the grass by Inokashira Pond.
“Ghibli restores the soul,” Shota said, munching on a sandwich.
“I can’t believe I missed the real Totoro room,” Ria groaned, her face buried in her plush.
“Mom, you tripped in front of a staff member and tried to negotiate entry by miming sad Catbus eyes. That’s memorable.”
“At least I didn’t cry over a cartoon bug—wait. Yes I did.”
“You did. Loudly.”
Epilogue: Thumb of Glory
That night, back home, Shota uploaded the infamous thumb photo to their family group chat.
Reactions flooded in:
* “What is this?! LOL!”
* “Is Ria becoming an abstract artist?”
* “This thumb... holds emotion.”
Shota patted her on the shoulder. “You became a legend, Ria.”
“Stop it… I’m embarrassed… but also… kind of proud.”
Bonus: Next Trip?
“Where to next?” Evelyn asked.
“Okinawa! Or maybe Shirakawa-go for some Princess Mononoke vibes!”
“Please promise Mom won’t outrun security again…”
