Linguistic Cognitive Physics: A Theoretical Inquiry into Zero, Language, and Physical Reality
Jun Mizukubo
Abstract This paper presents a theoretical framework that integrates language, cognition, and physics under the foundational assumption that the universe emerges from a conceptual zero. By positing the equivalence of linguistic and physical phenomena, and grounding the analysis in the paradoxical identity 0 = 1, this work seeks to reconcile existence and non-existence, actuality and potentiality, through a unified ontological and epistemological structure.
1. Introduction The origin of the universe poses a fundamental philosophical and scientific question: what preceded existence? The concept of zero emerges as a possible foundation. However, the transition from zero to one, from non-being to being, remains obscure. By contemplating a complete set of zero values, it is conceivable that such a totality can statistically represent one. From this perspective, existence may arise as a probabilistic inevitability within a universe defined by zero.
2. The Equivalence of Language and Physical Phenomena Language operates within the boundaries set by physical laws. Consequently, all linguistic phenomena are physical phenomena, and thus, language cannot contravene the laws of physics. Any utterance, even if apparently contradictory, must correspond to some physical or potential reality. For example, the statement "I am Taro" and its opposite "I am not Taro" may both hold within different layers of reality. This arises from viewing the universe as a set of zero, spanning the spectrum from 0% to 100%—from nonexistence to full realization.
3. Zero and Contradiction The theory embraces the coexistence of contradictions through the axiom 0 = 1. This allows for statements like "I am in Japan and Australia simultaneously" to hold within a framework where location and identity are fluid. The zero set accommodates overlapping truths and eliminates rigid distinctions between states that are conventionally seen as mutually exclusive.
4. The Limitations of Linguistic Representation Although language reflects physical reality, it is limited in expressing the absolute zero, which is posited to precede even the laws of physics. Therefore, while language may gesture toward zero, it cannot encapsulate the fundamental zero entirely. The assertion "I know fundamental zero" is thus inherently false from within the system governed by physical laws.
5. Reconciling Language and Zero Despite the limitations, if language can discuss zero, then the act of linguistic representation implies that zero is embedded within the laws of physics themselves. The speaker who articulates zero bridges the conceptual gap, suggesting an identity between law and nullity: 0 = 1.
6. Implications for Cosmology Traditional cosmology confronts the question of what existed before the Big Bang. If absolute zero cannot produce existence, then some minimal substance must have preceded it. However, any such substance lacks origin within conventional frameworks. The binary of 0 and 1 becomes a hindrance in explaining the emergence of the universe. From this perspective, 0 = 1 offers a more comprehensive ontological model.
7. The Number Line Universe Hypothesis Subatomic matter, once thought indivisible, has been subdivided endlessly into smaller particles. Yet, the pursuit of a fundamental, indivisible element remains elusive. The number line hypothesis proposes that between any two numbers, another can always be found. Therefore, an ultimate particle does not exist—only the approach to zero. Paradoxically, it is through the recognition of the impossibility of finding zero that zero reveals itself as the fundamental element.
8. Phenomenology of Speech Linguistic acts such as "I am a human" or "I am a dog" are not inherently false; they reflect different levels of potential reality. A person may be human in one reality and doglike in another latent state. Denying all potentiality and claiming absolute identity contradicts the principles of 0 = 1 and results in speech acts that lose their lawful, physical correspondence.
9. Contradiction as Proof When language expresses an impossibility, such as denying all potential and asserting an entirely false identity, it paradoxically affirms the limits of lawful expression. This contradiction serves as an indirect proof of the existence of the zero element—a concept that cannot be reached directly but becomes apparent through logical tension.
10. The Principle of Equivalence The core principle of this theory is the equivalence of linguistic and physical phenomena. Neither is primary; both are manifestations of the same fundamental physical laws. Misrepresentation arises not from language alone but also from potential inaccuracies in physical phenomena. Words and things operate under the same principles and are mutually reflective.
11. On Arbitrariness in Language Words appear arbitrary and context-dependent, as do physical phenomena. The term "I" may refer to any speaker, just as identical physical objects are never truly identical due to situational differences. Both language and physics exhibit ambiguity derived from the equation 0 = 1. Universality arises not from inherent absolutes but from collections of individual, unstable instances.
12. Conclusion This theory posits a radical reconceptualization of language and physics. By unifying them under the principle of zero—interpreted not as absence but as potentiality—it becomes possible to view all phenomena as expressions of a single underlying reality. The paradoxical identity 0 = 1 encapsulates this unity, allowing for a universe where contradiction is not a failure of logic, but the foundation of existence itself.
