When I was a student, I heard this story when I attended one of the international exchange events. The man who told me was a young black man, and I am not sure now if this man was from Africa or the Middle East or wherever. He told me that he once had grass coming out of his leg. I thought I had misheard his English and insisted on confirming it, but he said, “The grass came out of my leg.” He went on to tell me how it happened.

“Where I was born, parents teach their children various spells in addition to schoolwork. It differs from family to family. If for some reason a child offends his parents, they may refuse to teach him or her the spells. The child then becomes an adult who is taught schoolwork but lacks the knowledge of the other. I was taught well. One time I was running on a grassy field and fell badly. Unfortunately, I hit my shin on a big stone and broke it here (he pointed to his right shin, which had a big scar running down it). It hurt like hell, but at the same time I thought, this is the time to try that. It's a spell my father taught me about grass that connects bones. Find a weed called ...... (I couldn't make it out), pull it out at the root and break it. I would say the incantation and blow on it, and the broken grass would connect and my bones would heal at the same time. I tried it. However, instead of healing, the pain increased more and more. After a while, an adult found me and took me to a big hospital. They operated on me and found that the weed had been placed along the broken bone.”

I thought, “No way,” I couldn't say it though. But I guess he could tell by the look on my face, because he continued talking with a slightly smile on his face.

“I told my father when he came to visit me that I might have made a mistake with the spell,” he said. “My father and I checked the spell together. Nothing was wrong. My father was silent for a while, but then he said, ‘You know, times have changed. We are rapidly forgetting something. We have taught them correctly, but something is changing, something is different. We don't even know what it is anymore. We keep forgetting.’ I'm so afraid that I haven't tried the spells I was taught since then.”

It was clear that “times have changed,” referring to the contamination by the cultural influence of White Society.

His story could have been a big lie. But I could not immediately judge it as a lie, because I found a kind of seriousness and gravity in it. I never had a chance to meet him again, but I still recall this story from time to time.
