第5話 Sutton-ton
There was a fisherman’s only daughter. She was fair-skinned and plump, and she prided herself on being able to play any song on the shamisen. She was often invited to gatherings in place of geishas and was treated with great care.
One day, she was invited to a meeting of young men in a nearby village. The young man who came to guide her was a packhorse driver. He made space at the back of his cart, laid a cushion there, and seated her with her shamisen and geta. He proceeded along the national road during the day, singing the latest popular song, "Suttonton Bushi."
However, when the cart arrived at the village in the afternoon, it was discovered that only the cushion remained behind the seat, causing a great commotion.
Based on the packhorse driver’s words, "She was definitely sitting there when the horse urinated in the pine forest along the way," the entire village searched the nearby road, but her whereabouts were unknown. The village head, district head, school principal, and police officers gathered at the youth hall to discuss, but they couldn’t determine why she had disappeared in the first place.
In the end, it was decided that they had to inform her parents. Two young members rode bicycles to her house, where they found her in a celebratory kimono, covered in dust, being beaten by her father while she cried.
The two young men exchanged glances, then rushed into the house to stop her father and asked, "What is going on here?" The father, scratching his head in embarrassment, said, "Well, she came back saying she didn’t know the song 'Suttonton' that’s been popular lately... I’m terribly sorry..."
The two young men were even more confused. When they inquired further, they found out that the young man who had taken her on the cart had repeatedly sung "Suttonton Bushi" along the way. It was the first time she had heard the song, so she listened intently, thinking it would be difficult to perform at the gathering. Unfortunately, the young man was tone-deaf, and the melody was off, making it hard for her to grasp the correct tune. She realized she couldn’t learn the song this way, so she jumped off the cart with her shamisen and wooden clogs, prepared for the worst like death, and returned home.
One of the young men, impressed by her determination, said, "You have a truly admirable spirit. But there’s no need to worry. Come with us. We’ll redo the youth meeting all night. I’ll sing the song for you along the way."
